Below is the process used to create the training course.

Learning Objectives and Storyboard

The course was a designed to solves a pressing need in hospital settings of training soft skills to new Registered Nurses (RNs) after their graduation and before they start working in their role.


The directive for the design by the team was to have a "comic book visual aesthetic." Stock images were used and filtered in order to achieve the visual effects of the training. 


The learning objectives were to train RNs to provide positive workspace attitudes, provide reduction in situational stress, and provide environmental health principles to ensure optimal outcomes. 


To visualize the effect the learner's decisions were having, a sliding bar was placed at the bottom symbolizing their decisions maintaining workplace civility. The decision point buttons change color to give immediate feedback to the learner to their decision.

Course Design

To visualize the effect the learner's decisions were having, a sliding bar was placed at the bottom symbolizing their decisions maintaining workplace civility. The decision point buttons change color from a neutral gray to a colored option to give immediate feedback to the learner as to if their decision provided the best outcomes for the patient and the employees.


The circles with logos represented separate branching choices for the learner to take. This provides autonomy and depth to the learning experience and the branching experience facilitates critical thinking by the learner. This provides a deeper learning experience and increases learner retention.

xAPI Integration

Each of the learner choices are associated with variables within the training course. These are additionally linked to an xAPI integration which reports to a Learning Record Score (LRS) in addition to the Learning Management Software (LMS) recording the final score. 


The xAPI integrations were forwarded to a dashboard for each cohort of new RNs and this data informed the specific training needs of each individual for further training and aggregate scores to inform the management team of the support that would help everyone.

Outcome

The course was well received by the team and achieved the desired visuals. Additionally, xAPI integrations were very helpful to ensure new employees had access to further training quickly and increased retention of employees.
